The use of Polystrand CFRTP (Continuous Fiber Reinforced Thermoplastic) material offers trailer manufacturers the opportunity to reduce weight while maintaining exceptional strength, stiffness, and impact resistance. Polystrand transportation liners and aerodynamic components are engineered to meet the customer’s design specifications. Design flexibility is readily achieved using our ThermoPro® materials by tailoring combinations of varying fiber content (60 or 70% by weight) as well as fiber orientation. Typically ThermoPro laminates comprise either longitudinal continuous fibers or 0°/90° bi-axial known as X-Ply. E-Glass laminates are available in these configurations in either a polyethylene or polypropylene matrix.

Rail

The use of Polystrand CFRTP material offers rail car manufacturers the opportunity to reduce weight while maintaining exceptional strength and impact resistance. Because of the formability of Polystrand and the ability to form around tight radii, our material is used to produce durable corrugated panels that reduce maintenance and repair costs for refrigerated rail cars. These panels are stronger and more scuff-resistant than prior materials such as wood. Using Polystrand provides a uniform surface with a more consistent cosmetic finish. This is an important benefit when foam insulation is injected into the cavity between the panels and the exterior walls. The corrugated shape adds strength and allows cold air to circulate within the car and around the cold cargo when the rail cars are in use.

Aerospace

Polystrand provides the airline industry with lightweight and high strength honeycomb sandwich panels and X-ply™ (0°/90°) sheets. This material is used to make the lightest, most durable Unit Load Devices (ULD) in the field today. Using Polystrand CFRTP material results in a reduced ULD weight, up to a 50% savings, as compared to traditional aluminum ULD containers. This weight savings allows the airlines and air cargo firms to carry more cargo at reduced costs. Polystrand’s high impact resistance properties result in a longer life span of the ULD and fewer repairs.

Polystrand serves the automotive industry by providing high strength composites that improve strength, lower component weight, increase stiffness, and decrease total process cycle time. Polystrand’s CFRTP material can be co-molded in DLFT and LFT compression molding and injection molding operations and used as selective and strategic reinforcement. With our material and our customer’s strategic design, the total part weight of a front-end bolster was reduced by 8 pounds.

Pipe

Polystrand provides the pipe industry strong, durable, and environmentally friendly material. Our CFRTP material can also be used to retrofit old, outdated, and environmentally dangerous pipe. Polystrand can be added to standard polypropylene pipe using a modified filament winding process for extra reinforcement. Design flexibility is readily achieved using our ThermoPro® materials by tailoring combinations of varying fiber content (60 or 70% by weight) as well as fiber orientation. Typically ThermoPro laminates comprise either longitudinal continuous fibers or 0°/90° bi-axial known as X-Ply™. E-Glass laminates are available in these configurations in either a polyethylene or polypropylene matrix.

Polystrand’s™ ThermoBallistic® line of materials represents a breakthrough in energy management engineering for ballistic applications. ThermoBallistic tapes can be made into laminated sheets and panels. These materials can be molded to create end-use applications including ballistic-tolerant panels to protect troops, vehicles, equipment, and buildings.
